Tanpınar’s Five Cities

Catherine McKimm

Book Club: Reading Turkey in English

Our English Book Club continues to discuss Tanpınar’s Five Cities (Beş Şehir) this month. Published originally in 1946, the book was translated into English by Ruth Christie and published by the Anthem Press in 2018.

Here is Anthem’s brief description of the book: In Five Cities, Tanpınar focuses on cities significant in Anatolian history and Tanpınar’s own emotional life. Part history, part autobiography, part poetic meditation on time and memory, Five Cities is Proustian in style with a tension between a backward-looking melancholy and a concern for the unpredictable future of the author’s country.”

Catherine McKimm: An avid reader, reluctant lawyer, committed teacher and published author. Mother of four, married to a fabulous cook, she loves eating but not cooking.
